Maritime Training at the Island of Terschelling

MARITIME INSTITUTE WILLEM BARENTSZ (MIWB)

Founded in 1875, the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB) is a Dutch Higher Nautical Academy and a department of NHL University of Applied Sciences. The institute is located in the island of Terschelling, Netherlands. In the 135 years of its existence the institute has developed into one of the foremost nautical colleges in The Netherlands, of great renown at home and abroad. The MIWB simulator facilities, labs, workshops, training vessel, nautical/technical expertise and the modern campus guarantee top-quality maritime education and training.

As part of the NHL University, the Maritime Institute has over 500 full time students and in that is the largest of the Dutch Maritime Universities of Applied Sciences. The national simulator centre trains some 1000 own and external students from the other Dutch maritime institutes every year.

Training Programs

Bachelor programs

  • Maritime Officer Program (4 years): The duration of the study Maritime Officer is four years and counts 240 EC's. One EC equals to 28 hours of study load. The training course contains - basic program (90 EC); compulsory minors (60 EC); sea training (60 EC); and facultative minor + graduation (30 EC).
  • Hydrography Program (4 years): The duration of the study Hydrography is four years and counts 240 EC's. One EC equals to 28 hours of study load. The training course is acknowledged by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Fédération Internationale des Géomètres (FIG).

Short Courses

  • DP Induction: At the end of the course you have acquired knowledge of the principles of Dynamic Positioning, are able to set up a dynamic positioning system and have an understanding of the practical operation of associated equipment, including position reference systems.
  • DP Sea time: After this course you should acquire insight, experience and confidence in the execution of DP operations, including the ability to handle system errors under different conditions. You also will be able to plan and conduct any DP operation, including risk assessment, contingency planning and assessment of vessel capability.
  • DP Simulation: After this course you should acquire insight, experience and confidence in the execution of DP operations, including the ability to handle system errors under different conditions. You also will be able to plan and conduct any DP operation, including risk assessment, contingency planning and assessment of vessel capability.
  • ECDIS: The ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems) course has been designed to train bridge watchkeeping officers and other interested personnel in efficient use of ECDIS.
  • High Voltage: After completion of this course you will have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the functional, operational and safety requirements for a marine high voltage system.
  • Hydrography: After completion of this course you will be certified as a hydrographic surveyor working on dredging and inland and/or offshore survey projects.
  • Ice Navigator Training: This course provides you with the most important practical knowledge and theoretical background to successfully navigate in ice covered areas. Countries having to deal with ice navigation, urge to implement IMO guidelines in a course and certify participants.
  • Oil & Chemical Spill Response: After finishing all the components of the Oil & Chemical Spill Response course, you will be able to recognise hazards and understand the most important theoretical knowledge regarding chemicals and oil.
  • Ship Handling: After finishing all the components of the Oil & Chemical Spill Response course, you will be able to recognise hazards and understand the most important theoretical knowledge regarding chemicals and oil.
  • Tug Handling: Upon completion of the course the participants will have a better understanding of towing operations, how to act in case of emergencies and how to assure the safest working conditions.
