CHALMERS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Founded in 1829, Chalmers is a highly progressive university situated in Gothenburg, Sweden and known locally and globally for education, research and innovation with a wide range of applications. The university focuses on research and education in technology, natural science and architecture. Chalmers ranked number 76 in the world on QS Engineering and IT list and placed within the 52-75 bracket on Shanghai Jiao Tong’s Academic Ranking of World Universities Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences list (no. 1 in Sweden).

With more than 11000 students and 2500 employees, approximately 40 percent of Sweden’s graduate engineers and architects are educated at Chalmers. Each year, over 200 graduate and over 800 undergraduate degrees are awarded. More than 3000 graduate students attend programs at the university. The International student population is around 40% of all students at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Shipping and marine technology department organizes a coherent research and education within a wide knowledge area at Chalmers for education of seafarers and naval architects. These activities in operations and design have been complemented with competence within logistics/economy, environment and human factors. The Department of Technology Management and Economics focuses on the interaction between technology and society in an economic and social context. Organization and management of business processes such as logistics, innovation, technology and product development, production and strategic change are key issues. The department combines theory from engineering with theory from mainly economics and behavioral science.

Academic Programs

Masters Programs

  • MSc in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (2 years): This International Master’s Programme will give you a solid base for a future professional career in these fields of engineering. The programme focuses on ships and offshore structures, but is equally attractive for students with a general interest in strength- and hydrodynamic analysis and systems engineering.
  • MSc in Maritime Management (2 years): The programme gives the students a theoretical and practical knowledge in Project Management, Quality, Risk and Safety Management with a well proven Chalmers standard at Master level. These courses are generic and are included in Chalmers Master’s programs in International Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Quality and Operations Management. The programme also gives Master’s level standard’s skills within the areas Leadership and Communication, Marine Environmental Protection and Energy Management from courses developed by professional researchers at Chalmers Department of Shipping and Marine Technology.
  • MSc in Supply Chain Management (2 years): The program focuses on the design, management and improvement of supply chain management strategies. It is multidisciplinary and builds on several scientific disciplines. This program helps students develop their skills in purchasing, logistics, marketing, transport and general management. Problem-based learning including case studies and problem solving with quantitative and qualitative models is one important aspect of the program. Large multinational firms such as Volvo, Scania, SKF, Skanska, Nestlé, Porsche, Procter & Gamble, Quiksilver, DHL, Schenker and IBM, as well as top-flight consultancy firms such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group and ADL have employed many students who have majored in supply chain management at Chalmers.
  • MSc Nordic Master in Maritime Management (2 years): The aim is to provide officers and shore-based personnel in the shipping cluster an opportunity to further educate themselves to become the next generation of leaders in the shipping cluster and enable them to participate in research education. The program is jointly offered by Chalmers University of Technology, Aalto University Finland, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU) & The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden. The program is aimed at three groups - officers looking for broader and more in-depth knowledge of operating a vessel; officers looking for a shore-based job in the shipping cluster; and shore-based personnel looking for more in-depth knowledge in shipping and logistics. Graduates from the programme can apply for management positions at companies in the shipping cluster including operation manager, purchaser, technical superintendent, marine superintendent, broker etc. Graduates have sufficient knowledge to apply for research studies in the following areas: maritime environment, ship safety, human factors, surveying etc.

Doctoral Programs

  • PhD Programs: The department of Shipping and Marine Technology comprises scientific areas related to shipping and ship technology on and below the water. The doctoral programme has three tracks: Naval Architecture, Shipping Technology and the Marine Environment.

Executive Programs

  • Managing Global Supply Chain: Managing Global Supply Chains is a 10-day development program for experienced managers in the supply/demand chain functions. The goal of the program is to give a deeper knowledge of how to handle the key issues. The participant will benefit from contributions in many areas. The program blends state-of-the art academic research results with best practices from successful companies. Workshop training and action learning are important features in the program. The program in delivered with three modules in Gothenburg, Chicago and Oxford.

Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

  • Bachelor´s degree (or the equivalent) with a Major in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics or Engineering Mathematics

English Language: There are several ways of proving that you possess the required level of English language proficiency. Most commonly this is done by submitting one of the approved English language tests.

Maritime Management

  • Bachelors degree with major in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Law, Economics or Shipping and logistics or the equivalent. For applicants without a major in Nautical science or Marine engineering there is an additional prerequisite of studies in Maritime law or Transport economics or the equivalent. Professional experience relevant to the Maritime Industry is preferable.

Supply Chain Management

  • Bachelors degree with major in Industrial Engineering and Management or an Engineering Discipline. Mathematics, minimum 30 credit (including Single- and multivariable analysis, Linear algebra and Statistics, minimum 7.5 cr. each). Minimum 15 credit from studies in one or several of the following subjects; Industrial management, Logistics, Operations management or Supply Chain Management. The required 15 cr. may also include maximum 7.5 cr. of Sustainable development.
