Founded in 1910, The University of Southern Mississippi is a comprehensive doctoral and research-driven university with a proud history and an eye on the future. In just 100 years, Southern Miss has grown from a small teachers' college into a premier research university with a national reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics. A dual campus university, Southern Miss serves students on campuses in Hattiesburg and Long Beach, in addition to six teaching and research sites in Mississippi.

Southern Miss offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in five degree-granting colleges – Arts & Letters, Business, Education & Psychology, Health and Science & Technology. In all, Southern Miss offers more than 180 degree programs for both undergraduates and graduates.

The College of Business offers various business and management programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Supply chain management emphasis is offered under the business administration degree. The Department of Construction under School of Science & Technology offers various logistics programs at the undergraduate and masters levels.

Academic Programs

Undergraduate Programs

  • BSBA in Management (Supply Chain Management): The programs of study in management have three objectives: (1) to provide students with concepts, knowledge, and skills required in the effective management of organizations; (2) to prepare students for employment that will lead to positions of managerial responsibility; and (3) to make education in general management available to students pursuing technical, educational, and professional careers.
  • BS in Industrial Engineering Technology (Logistics): The major in industrial engineering technology is designed to prepare students to meet the growing demands of industry for employees with expertise in manufacturing processes, statistical quality control, production management, logistics, automation and computer-aided manufacturing.

Graduate Program

  • MS in Logistics, Trade and Transportation: This program will prepare professionals for this new global economy and serve a niche not addressed nationally by logistics/transportation education and research centers; particular emphasis will be on the north-south multi-modal trade through the Americas. This Master Program can be customized to fit the working professional needs for career advancement with courses on-line and/or executive format. It is offered through the Center for Logistics, Trade, and Transportation (CLTT).

  • Accreditation: The University of Southern Mississippi is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s, master’s, specialist’s and doctoral degrees. The College of Business at Southern Miss is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), the premier accrediting agency for collegiate management education worldwide. All undergraduate engineering technology programs are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (TAC-ABET).
  • The Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation: The University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) will provide valuable professional development and applied research for private and public sectors of the growing transportation and shipping industry.
  • Oak Ridge Associated Universities: Since 1992, students and faculty of The University of Southern Mississippi have benefited from its membership in Oak Ridge Associated Universities. ORAU is a consortium of 96 colleges and universities, and a contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) located in Oak Ridge, Tenn. ORAU works with its member institutions to help their students and faculty gain access to federal research facilities throughout the country; to keep its members informed about opportunities for fellowship, scholarship and research appointments; and to organize research alliances among its members.
  • Research:Southern Miss continues to meet head-on the intellectual and human issues of the day. The challenges are formidable, and university professors and students are tackling the issues through relevant research that translates into real-world applications and learning opportunities. Bolstered by $80 million in external funding during the 2009-10 fiscal year, support for USM research has increased substantially during the past decade and annually sustains a variety of robust research projects.
  • College of Business Placement: The university maintains a central Career Services office that assists College of Business students in locating employment following graduation. COB students are encouraged to establish a file with Career Services at least two semesters prior to graduation in order to qualify for interviews with prospective employers.
  • Study Abroad in Business: The College of Business offers its students the opportunity to earn six hours of approved credit toward their degrees while studying abroad. Business study-abroad courses may be substituted for the following requirements (maximum of six hours) subject to prior approval.
  • Museum of Art: The University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art was established in 1997 by the Board of Trustees. Located in the Fine Arts Building off Southern Drive, the museum is composed of three exhibition spaces: C. W. Woods Art Gallery, Lok Exhibition Gallery and Karnes-Sullivan Gallery. Admission to the museum is free.

SOUTHERN MISS Admissions

Freshman Requirements:

Students planning to enter the university as freshmen must complete the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) and submit a composite ACT or combined SAT (verbal/quantitative) score. Please note that the writing components of the ACT and SAT are not used in evaluation for admission. TOEFL is required for international students.

MS in Logistics, Trade & Transportation:

  • Undergraduate record (Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPA in their last 60 hours for regular admission)
  • GMAT or GRE
  • Work Experience (2 years recommended not compulsory)
  • Letters of Recommendation (3)
