FALMOUTH MARINE SCHOOL

Falmouth Marine School provides a comprehensive selection of courses from introduction to university level in Boatbuilding, Leisure & Watersports, Marine Engineering and Marine Science. As a result of the specialization the FE and university-level courses attract students from a wide age range across the UK.

The school has an excellent international reputation for the marine courses with superb facilities including boatbuilding and engineering workshops, a dedicated marine science lab and a well equipped watersports centre.

The research unit of the Falmouth Marine School allows students to participate in original research and gain a greater understanding of the marine systems they intend to work in. It actively develops links with other organizations. The Annual Industry Day held every December puts students in contact with employers and promotes their chances of employment in the field of their choice.

Training Programs

Marine Engineering Programs

  • Light Marine Engineering City & Guilds Certificate Level 2: f you're interested in light marine engineering, such as for pleasure or small commercial vessels, or are looking to gain a foundation for further specialist skills, this course is for you.
  • Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 (Marine Engineering or Boatbuilding): This is a one-year, full-time programme and covers the three main pathways to employment within the marine industry. The course is composed of a very practical qualification where students will study for the City and Guilds 2451 Level 3 qualification in Boat Construction and Maintenance, specialising in either Marine Engineering or Boatbuilding.
  • HNC Marine Engineering (Level 4 - Degree Year 1): The program will provide a challenging, innovative and broad based vocational programme of study to enable the learner to undertake professional development within their area of employment. It will develop the concepts, knowledge, skills and techniques required to support engineering and marine related industries within the south-west of England and the UK.

Boatbuilding Programs

  • Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance City & Guilds Certificate Level 2 (Boat Building): This course is for people that have a general interest in engineering aspects of pleasure and small commercial vessels, as a foundation for the specialist engineering course at level 3.
  • Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 (Marine Engineering or Boatbuilding): See descriptions above
  • Yacht Fit Out and Composites City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 (Boatbuilding): This is a practical based course, perfect for developing basic boatbuilding, which includes use of hand and machine tools, drawing and calculations.

Leisure & Watersports Programs

  • Watersports Extended Diploma: This course is for students who are thinking of becoming a watersports instructor in the UK or abroad, PE teacher, coach, fitness instructor, event manager or work in sports development.
  • Coaching Paddlesport BCU Certificate Level 1: Training in teaching techniques afloat and ashore is provided during the instructor training course, which is staffed by RYA Coach/Assessors. The course will be based on a five-day week or 50 hours.
  • Windsurfing Assistant Instructor RYA Level 1: RYA Start Windsurfing instructors are qualified to teach the Start Windsurfing course and Stages 1 and 2 of the Youth Windsurfing Scheme under the supervision of a senior instructor.
  • Safety Boat RYA Certificate Level 2: This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.
  • Dinghy Instructor RYA Level 2: Instructor certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.
  • National Powerboat RYA Certificate Level 2: Regarded by many as the 'driving licence' for powerboats, our RYA Powerboat Level 2 course offers a thorough introduction to powerboat handling.
  • HNC Marine Leisure Management (Level 4 - Degree year 1): This course will provide a challenging program of study that will enable learners to develop the concepts, knowledge, skills and techniques required for today′s marine leisure management industry.
  • FdSc Operational Yacht Science (Level 5): This foundation degree is based at the UKSA centre in Cowes, Isle of Wight and is validated and supported by Falmouth Marine School. You will gain the skills you need to work as Deck Crew onboard Superyachts, working towards MCA Officer of the Watch 3000, (OOW 3000), allowing you to work as a Deck Officer on Yachts up to 3000 GRT plus the experience and qualifications that allow you to work towards First Mate and Captain level.

Marine Engineering & Boatbuilding Apprenticeships

  • Marine Engineering Apprenticeship Level 2: This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job to become qualified in marine engineering; while laying the foundation for a career in building, fitting out, finishing or maintaining boats. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications - Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Marine Engineering & Level 2 Certificate in Boatbuilding Maintenance and Support.
  • Marine Engineering Apprenticeship Level 3: This is a follow on course from the Level 2 Marine Engineering Apprenticeship, and supports a variety of positions e.g. boat builder, carpenter, marine electrics and marine engineer.
    Boatbuilding Apprenticeship Level 2: This program is deal if you are working in the industry and want to become a qualified boat builder. You'll need to be employed within a marine related industry.
  • Boatbuilding Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3: This program is ideal if you wish to build on your existing knowledge and skills to develop your career prospects. You'll need to be employed within a marine related industry and have completed a level 2 qualification or have relevant experience.
