The Maritime Training Center is a one-of-a-kind facility that will provide company-specific job training to Alabama’s burgeoning shipbuilding industry. The center is a subsidiary of Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT), a division of the Alabama Department of Commerce, which encourages economic development through job-specific training. Training services are offered in many areas, at no cost, to new and expanding businesses throughout the State.

The Maritime Training Center provides job seekers with the qualifications and skills needed to join the growing maritime industry, as well as to meet the needs of related industries throughout Alabama. It is a multipurpose training and education facility, featuring high bay welding shops, classrooms, and a computer lab. The center is a NCCER accredited training unit under the Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium and a member of the Alabama Community College System.

Training Programs

Individual Training

The Maritime Training Center provides training for individuals and registered companies in several industry-specific skills. These classes are at no cost and advertised from time to time.

Company Training

  • Core Course: Introductory Craft Skills (72.5 hours)
  • Pipefitting Courses: NCCER Levels 1 & 2 Pipefitting (126 hours) and NCCER Levels 3 & 4 Pipefitting (132.5 hours)
  • Safety Courses: Aerial Lift (8 hours); OSHA 10-Hour Maritime; Overhead Crane and Rigging (16 hours); Plasma Table (ESAB) and Crane (48 hours); Power Industrial Truck (8 hours); and Rough Terrain Forklift (8 hours).
  • Scaffolding Courses: Scaffolding/Fall Arrest (176 hours)
  • Welding Courses: Level 2 Welding (187.5 hours); Level 3 Welding (370 hours +100 hours elective); Level 4 Welding-Advanced Topics in Welding: Aluminum (160 hours); TIG Welding Plate & Pipe (70 hours); Welding w/OSHA (Day - 480 hours); and Welding w/OSHA (Night - 240 hours)
  • Quality Control: NDT-Liquid Penetrant (Dye) Testing (20 hours); NDT-Magnetic Particle Testing (20 hours); NDT-Ultrasonic Testing Level 1 (60 hours); and NDT-Visual Testing (24 Hours).
  • Design: AutoCAD Skills Assessment (48 hours); Marine Design (40 hours); and Ship Constructor (40 hours)
